Juneteenth

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, commemorates the 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas, the last Confederate state to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. General Gordon Granger’s arrival in Galveston signaled freedom for over 250,000 enslaved people, nearly 2.5 years after Lincoln’s proclamation. It became a federal holiday in 2021.
